The discussions, which were preliminary, did not include the Johnson family, which owned the resort. At the time, Jimmy Johnson, one of the owners, insisted the property was not on the market, but added, "Of course, like any other business, if someone comes along with an offer at the right price, we would be willing to talk about it."
The department intends to incorporate Sunrise into the adjacent Machimoodus State Park. It anticipates operating some of the resort's amenities this summer, including the large swimming pool. A full opening of the resort will require a private partner and capital investment in the infrastructure. The department is seeking partnership opportunities to reopen the resort for full use in the future, according to the governor's office.

"For 93 years Sunrise Resort has provided recreational opportunities. Now we are continuing the tradition by providing even more opportunities for families around the state to come here to hike, canoe, kayak and camp," Rell said.
A developer had approached the Johnsons about buying the resort and turning it into an 89 home development, but the owners declined because of the burden it would place on town services.
The Johnson family insisted that they were not selling Sunrise for financial reasons, but because brothers Jimmy and Larry, who ran the resort, wanted to pursue other business ventures.

In November 2007, Brad Parker, then first selectman of East Haddam, said he had met to discuss a possible state purchase of the land with officials, including state Sen. Eileen Daily, D 33rd District, and state Rep. Linda Orange, D 48th District.
