He said: "Mike will be very much missed. As the band's musical director, he helped the band recover when it was at a low ebb. His ability, energy and commitment energised the band and we are now thriving as a result."

"He could make people believe in themselves and if anyone said they couldn't do something he would say 'yes you can'. He would get you to break down the music into parts, play a few bars and then put it back together.

"Many of the children looked up to him and it was a huge loss, which we are still feeling now. He was a very, very talented trumpet player and as a teacher and band leader he was fantastic.

He trained as a brass teacher after completing 10 years in the Army, later running Swindon Music Service and was involved in many local bands, also including Swindon Young Musicians.

At the time Pegasus Band chairman David Ferris credited Mike with turning around the fortunes of the band.
