Democrats keep asking for the same thing in different ways. He likened President Obama's thirst for more spending to "the Kennedy kids with one six pack among them."But I digress. I'm not a fan of candidates signing interest group pledges, as I've written before. I think they handcuff elected officials who might otherwise make reasonable compromises. The sequester is a prime example. Republicans would not vote to raise taxes even a little bit for the wealthiest Americans in exchange for spending cuts to reduce the deficit. Democrats wouldn't cut spending without tax increases. So, we have the punishment, which was a package of across the board cuts that were so ill conceived that they were supposed to force both parties into compromise. It's not a punishment for Norquist, however. He said the sequester is a "huge win" that will save $2.5 trillion over a decade. "We need to protect the sequester," he said. He said it's the overall spending cap he supports, not necessarily the specific line items that were cut. But the whole point of sequestration was to cut programs that were dear to both parties Skechers Shape Ups Recall

go home and you're two thirds through your Coke bottle and you find a rat head . you say to yourself, I may not buy Coke again," he said. "Republican elected officials who vote for tax increases are rat heads in a Coke bottle. They damage the brand for everyone else."If that last quotation doesn't tip you off, Vans one of the reasons Norquist is so effective is his ability to turn a phrase. Most of his quips are at the expense of Democrats, of course. He referred to left wing coalitions as "competing parasites" that will turn on each other if tax money dries up. military spending that Republicans want and entitlement spending that Democrats support.Norquist says he expects Republicans will eventually compromise with Obama to pass a spending resolution and raise the debt ceiling in exchange for some sort of concession on Obamacare. That sort of negotiation is fine with him, he says, because it advances the issue of spending cuts even if Republicans don't get everything they want.Ultimately, Norquist says government gridlock is useful while the federal government is divided between the two parties. Republicans can't do much good, but they can stop Democrats from doing anything too bad. The payoff, as he sees it, will come after 2016 when he thinks Republicans will control both chambers of Congress and the White House. The problem with Norquist's pledge isn't the principle of reducing taxes. Federal taxes in general are too high. But too often, both parties have chosen to continue to spend on the credit card rather than paying for desirable programs with revenue increases or choosing offsetting cuts. If we are to reduce the debt, both taxes and spending need to be on the table.Broken government may be fine with Norquist now, but I guarantee it will still be broken if and when his party takes control. In a culture where the minority can stonewall and create gridlock, there's not much advantage to being the party that actually has to govern.

Tax increases harm GOP 'brand'

As a roomful of Iowa Republicans were digging into their bacon and eggs at an Urbandale restaurant on Wednesday morning, Grover Norquist was quietly handing out copies of a recent article in the National Journal. The piece, titled "Grover Norquist: Father of the Blood Oath," was part of a series called "Who Broke Washington." It portrays the anti tax pledge that Norquist has successfully pushed for 25 years as a reason for the dysfunction and gridlock in Washington. Most people might not want to disseminate an article that paints them as a villain in a government shutdown. Some, however, might get a kick out of being portrayed as a powerful supervillain whose very name has become a curse word to Democrats. The pledge hasn't changed much over the years. Candidates who sign it promise to never vote for a net tax increase, period. Americans for Tax Reform has been diligent about working to defeat candidates who violate the pledge after signing it. It has been blamed often in recent times as the failure of a "grand bargain" on deficit reduction that combines tax increases with spending cuts.Norquist characterizes it as a form of brand protection for Republicans, sort of like quality control helps Coca Cola protect its soft drink brand. "With the pledge, Republicancandidates have branded themselves, and through them the party, as the party that will not raise your taxes," he said."If you Mbt Shoes Price Uk
