Super Bull pulls no punches
He grew up no stranger to farm animals driving a mule team or to hard work, long hours of loading hay and corn. A non Amish acquaintance first talked him into trying bull riding; "2001 is when I got on my first bull," he says, and he won his first championship two years later.

Ropp always does well in these parts, having notched wins in Bridgeport, Conn. and a near win in Syracuse. "I don't want to talk too soon, but I always seem to get lucky and pull it off when I'm up there," he says. "The promoters all seem to smile when they see me comin'."

"Learnin' how to stay on a bull ain't as hard as learning how to win, and that ain't as hard as learnin' how to land on your feet," he says; he's given to folksy pronouncements like that. "If you land on your feet you've got a better chance of stayin' healthy. If they can take care of themselves, riders can ride good until they're 34 or 35. If you're right good, you can win a bunch of money."
Ropp is scheduled to be one of 40 riders on Saturday night's bull riding card; another 40 will go through the chutes Sunday, all competing for cash prizes. If they're among the top finishers they qualify for bigger and better events like those sponsored by Professional Bull Riders Inc. (PBR). "PBR is the ones you see on TV," explains Ropp.
as rodeo heated up when bull riding pulled itself away from professional rodeo a bit in the mid eighties, when PBR incorporated as a separate governing entity. Adding fuel to the debate is that SuperBull is created and managed by the same folks, Feld Entertainment, that bring the ice shows and the Ringling Brothers Circus to town.
2010 bucks, spins and "sunfishes" its way into the TU Center for two nights of bone bruising entertainment.
Which makes the following a gutsy aim: "I have a goal to be ridin' for another five years," he says. "If I take pretty good care of myself."
In the chute, a rider climbs aboard and grips a rope handhold on a randomly selected bull's back, and must stay aboard for eight full seconds between the opening of the gate and a whistled signal; "You don't win nothin' if you don't make the whistle," says Ropp.
The youngest of 12 siblings, "I Mbt Footwear Melbourne was born and raised Amish, growing up living like a settler in the 1800's," he says, on a 150 acre farm in Jamesport, in northwestern Missouri, where his parents still reside. He now calls Trenton, "something like 12 miles from my mom and dad's house," home.
Of course, not long afterward, he sustained facial injuries at another event that prematurely ended his season and knocked him out of contention for that year's world finals. Two years later, he broke his leg.

"I was born a cowboy without really knowin' it," says 28 year old Missouri native Willy Ropp. "I didn't realize it until I got into bull riding. Never dreamed I could take it this far."
The bulls offer stiff competition. Indeed, the bulls can be as famous as the riders; on Ropp's resume, one of his prouder achievements is that in 2006, he rode Chicken On A Chain considered one of the PBR's top five bovine stars to a score Skechers Air Max 95
Put the debate on authenticity aside and the question is just who is it that climbs aboard an angry steer for a living? Well, "real" cowboy skill or not, tough guys like Willy Ropp do.
But is it sport, or just spectacle? There is debate on that as there is over whether Colorado or Wyoming can claim to be home to the very first real rodeo, over a century and a third ago. You certainly won't find rodeo on an Olympics program, yet there are varsity rodeo programs at colleges in Western and Sunbelt states where it's a popular let's say diversion.
How far? Ropp, a professional championship bull and bronco rider for nearly seven years, has ridden bulls often referred to as the most dangerous eight seconds in sports in five countries, including five trips to Australia, and in every state of the union but two. Which is an achievement indeed because there isn't a lot of rodeo riding going on in New England or New York.
