Fourth generation equipment that held sentimental value in addition to its practicality is now gone, and money to hire helping hands just isn't there. But Gold Krest is still kicking, and Webb said it's thanks to the kindness of friends, family, neighbors, other farmers and even strangers, who've helped with everything from working on the farm to making donations of seedlings and flowers.

"I feel like it's the reason why I was born," he said.
"It was just horrible, a horrible loss," he said.
past year I had thoughts of not farming, but my father didn't want to do that; my son wants to take over the farm. So we got going. Just selling the stuff here really makes you feel a lot better, doing something. So I'm really glad we got the chance to do that."

Seeing friendly faces at Thursday's farmer's market reminded Webb of how much his farm means to the community, and gave him hope for its recovery down the road.
Gold Krest Farm is located at 3447 River Rd. in East Greenbush, where it runs a farm stand. The farm also has stands at the CDPHP Farmers Market, the North Greenbush Farmers Market and the Capital District Farmers Market in Menands.
"It helps you financially, and just talking about (the farm's troubles) to people helps a lot," he said.

After the devastation, Webb hit several roadblocks in filing insurance claims and seeking financial assistance to help mitigate his losses. Although he was awarded one small grant, he was denied several others, and won't be able to apply for local assistance from the Rensselaer County bureau of the Farm Service Agency until sometime this fall.
The turnaround wasn't easy, and Webb said Gold Krest won't be back to its full strength for another five to seven Skechers Men Casual years. Right now it's operating at about 25 percent of its production last year, he said, and that's after months of cleanup that stretched from fall to spring.
It's been a long, frustrating road, but Thursday marked a turning point of sorts for the farm, as it made its debut at its first farmers market of the season, outside the CDPHP offices in Albany. It was an exciting day, Webb said, and proof of the progress Gold Krest has made since last year.
Gold Krest lost everything all its crops and most of its equipment to the tune of a $363,000 loss. Crops were covered in 10 feet of water, three tractors and several trucks were destroyed and Webb and his family were left wondering what they would do in the aftermath.
Meeting planting deadlines June 30 for corn, Gold Krest's biggest and most lucrative crop means that the farm won't be able to produce as much as it had in past years, and paying for seed ranging from $600 to $1,300 per bag for corn alone proved difficult during such tough financial times. Webb had to sell off much of his remaining equipment in order to afford seeds and fertilizer, he said, a process that was equally as upsetting as losing his crops.
that farming brings, he was excited to one day run the family business.
